Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Pass a Diamond Tester?

Jewelers use diamond testers to verify a gemstone’s authenticity. Pressing the tool’s small needle-like probe against a diamond, the jeweler measures how it conducts heat or electricity. Because diamonds conduct heat differently from glass or cubic zirconia, the diamond tester will beep or light up when it determines that the stone is real

A diamond tester will identify lab gemstones as real because lab-grown diamonds possess the same visual, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds. At-home diamond testers will indicate a lab-grown diamond as genuine, while a more expensive tool used by a gemologist may indicate only very trace differences.

Determining a Lab-Grown Diamond’s Authenticity

In addition to a diamond tester, there are multiple ways to ensure that your lab-grown diamond is a real diamond.

Diamond Certification

Just like mined diamonds, lab diamonds are certified by leading gem labs like the International Gemological Institute (IGI). The standards used by IGI for certification are the same as the ones used for mined diamonds. The certificate is an unbiased, third-party evaluation of the cut, color, clarity, and carat weight of the stone. When you purchase a lab diamond, the dealer should provide you with the gemstone’s certification.

Check the Inscription

Every diamond certified by the IGI has a unique report number laser-inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. That number should match the ID number on your diamond certificate. This ensures that the diamond certified by the IGI is the same stone in your possession.

Choose a Reputable Merchant

Only purchase your lab-grown diamond from a merchant or retailer with a stellar reputation. A truly respectable jeweler will be 100% transparent with documentation regarding your gemstone. They will also offer a return policy in the event that you’re not satisfied with your purchase.

Why Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Less Expensive Than Mined Diamonds?

Many skeptics will question why lab grown diamonds are dramatically less expensive than mined diamonds if they’re exactly the same?

The reasons are simple.

Lab-grown gemstone prices reflect production costs and market competition.

Conversely, mined diamond prices are based on a scarcity-driven model. Historically, a small number of mined diamond industry players have restricted the supply of diamonds to perpetuate an artificial sense of scarcity while inflating their cost.

Additionally, mined diamonds cost more because extracting them from the earth costs more. Mining, equipment, and labor are costly. Supply chain processes also factor in with multiple middlemen adding their own fees along the supply chain, further driving up prices.

Mined diamonds are typically 70-90% more expensive than lab-grown diamonds for all these reasons. However, a higher price doesn’t make them any more real than lab-grown diamonds.
